7:00 PM-9:00 PM on Sat

Join professor/astronomer Mark Freilich for an evening of star gazing and a party in celebration of the winter solstice. What is a “solstice”? How does it relate to the sun and the earth? In addition to Mr. Freilich’s usual lecture, we will be enjoying some light snacks and fellowship with fellow star gazers.

Seasoned professor/astronomer Mark Freilich will lead each of these interactive astronomy programs. Each program features an indoor question and answer session on basic astronomy, fun and games followed by exciting outdoor viewing using a professional telescope. Participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars. Handout information packet is included. Limited to 20 participants. (although this is an adult workshop, children ages 9 and up are welcome to register as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult).

December 16 Sky Highlights
The main sky highlights for this month would be observing the constellation Orion consisting of the red giant star Betelgeuse and blue giant Rigel. Also, we will see the Great Orion Nebula. We will locate the open cluster of the Plieades and observe the faint Andromeda galaxy. This month we will run our winter solstice star party as well. Everyone is invited to bring their telescopes and binoculars as we serve snacks, refreshments, and play games as well. It is a fun and rewarding night for all to enjoy.
