This workshop will focus on the how and why of landscape painting. We will concentrate on improving our composition skills, understanding the importance of simplification of shapes and masses, understanding the importance of correct values, atmospheric perspective, creating a center of interest, the use of edges, drawing and color. This workshop is for those who already enjoy working with pastels and/or oils, or committed students who wish to experiment with these mediums.

  • Please bring:
  • If you prefer to use PASTEL:
  • -Drawing boards: Plein Air Workshops: Please bring 2-3 panels per day in your choice of sizes 12" x 16", 11" x 14", or 9" x 12". Bring board light in weight, such as Masonite or Birchwood.
  • -Paper - Bring your favorite pastel surface. I enjoy using Canson Moonstone and 400 grit UART Sanded Pastel Paper. Cut paper to approximately 11" x 14", 9" x 12", or 8" x 10" - to fit your drawing boards.
  • -Pastels - Largest assortment of colors possible; Rembrant pastels are a fine pastel to begin with; conte crayons, earth tones. A great pastel box for working in the field is the Heilman box (Phone: 530-778-3080)
  • -Outdoor French Easel (Julian BRAND recommended) - half box

  • -Canvas Panels: For Plein Air (outdoor) Workshops: Please bring 2-3 panels per day in your choice of sizes 8" x 10", 9" x 12", 10" x 12", or 11" x 14". We will be doing small studies on the canvas panels.
  • -Canvas Panels: Studio Workshops: Please bring 2-3 of your choice of sizes in panel or stretched canvas between 12" x 16" and 16" x 20".
  • -Brushes- suggested sizes: Flats sizes: 4, 6, 8, and 10 Rounds sizes: 6 and 8
  • -Palette Knives: one small #3 and one medium #8
  • -Turpenoid (odorless turpentine)
  • -Brush cleaner – Holbein small or medium
  • -Palette Cup
  • -FOR ALL STUDENTS: Please bring paper towels, Small Sketchbook - 5" x 7" to 8.5" x 11"
  • -Masking tape, 1" Kneaded eraser
  • -Small Trash Bags (e.g. grocery store plastic bags)
  • -Broad Tip Marker, black (for drawing thumbnails & note taking)
  • -Wide-brim hat- for shade and to reduce glare from direct sunlight (a dark interior in the hat helps reduces the glare from reflected light)
  • -Photographic reference material for studio sessions
  • -Sun block/Bug repellent
  • -Drinking water

Lorenzo Chavez was born and raised in New Mexico. His first inspirations and foundation as a young artist were formed by the local landscape and the art history in New Mexico. Lorenzo now lives in Parker, Colorado and uses this location as a base to travel and paint the American West. Lorenzo graduated with honors from The Colorado Institute of Art in 1983. Lorenzo paints in both pastel and oil. He participates in several national invitational and International group exhibitions and has won major awards including the Pastel Society of America in New York; His work was chosen to represent PSA in the Butler Art Museum, Ohio. Pastel Society of Spain, Pastel Society of France, Artists of America Show in Denver, Rims to Ruins Exhibition, Plein Air Painters of America, Buffalo Bill Center for the West, Albuquerque Art Museum, Maynard Dixon Country, 100 Gold Medal Exhibition at The Pasadena Art Museum, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, The Brinton Museum, Colorado Springs Fine Art Museum, Coors Show in Denver, Butler Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Gilcrease Museum, Steamboat Art Museum. Legacy Gallery, Cape Cod Art Museum, Blue Rain Gallery Santa Fe, Helena Fox Fine Art, Settlers West Gallery, Howard Manville Gallery, Gallery of the Southwest, Trailside Galleries. He was featured in a successful one-man show at the C.M. Russell Museum and has participated successfully in several C.M. Russell Art Auctions. Feature articles have appeared in Southwest Art, Art of the West, American Artist Magazine, Plein Air Magazine, Artists Magazine, Western Art Review, American Art Review, Pastel Journal, and Denver Post. Eight books feature his art: Les Mitres de Art France, Painted Sky, Art Journey America Landscapes, Colorado Landscapes, and Pure Color: The Best of Pastel 1 &2 and Plein Air New Mexico. Lorenzo is a nationally known Fine Art instructor who has taught numerous workshops across the United States.
