In this workshop, you will be exploring the materials and textures of drawing, collage and mixed media within the grown up version of a pop-up book. Using a variety of materials, you will create diverse and intricate images that will pop out of two dimensional surfaces only to fold back into a book format. Experimentation, a love of textures and colors as well as a fascination with pop-up books and collage are the only requirements you will need.

  • Materials needed for students:
  • a. Glue stick
  • b. Spray adhesive (small)
  • c. Matte gel medium (small)
  • d. Collage papers
  • e. Colored papers
  • f. X-acto knife
  • g. Scissors
  • h. Color pencils
  • i. Fine markers
  • j. Watercolors
  • k. Misc. ribbons, lace, fabric, baubles.
  • l. Old photos you are willing to cut up.
  • m. Photocopies, printed matter.
  • n. Dried botanical

Ajean Ryan creates drawings and installations based on the themes of abstraction and landscape. In her ongoing works she calls “Dimensional Drawings”, she creates poetic metaphors of marks suspended in space using non-traditional drawing materials. Ajean received her B.A. in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting from U.C.L.A. then went to receive her M.F.A. in Drawing and Installation Arts at U.C. Berkeley. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in museums, galleries as well as non-profit spaces. Ajean has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including most the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2014 and the Creative Capital Workshop Grant in 2011. She is an Associate Professor of Drawing at Colorado State University and currently lives in Loveland, Colorado.
