In this class, we will focus on non-toxic, water-based monotypes, printing from various substrates such as vellum, mat board and Plexiglas, along with additional stencil printing. We will work from a basic image size of 9 x 12 inches, and we will print onto various papers, mostly unsized or Asian.

Sue will also show examples of various watercolor monotypes at the start of the class. She’ll demonstrate vellum preparation and paint application and provide instruction regarding paper handling/soaking and using the press.

  • Vellum
  • Gum Arabic
  • Pre-coated mat board
  • Some watercolors
  • Some brushes
  • Various stencil materials
  • 4 sheets of Arches 88 paper per student ( 12 x 15)
  • Materials needed by students:
  • Additional tube watercolors (Daniel Smith works the best)
  • Additional papers (torn to about 12 x 15)
  • Your favorite brushes
  • Bounty paper towels
  • Q-tips
  • Blow Dryer
  • Newsprint

Sue Oehme is founder and principal of Oehme Graphics in Steamboat Springs (CO), one of the country’s leading fine print publishers. Susan received her BFA in printmaking and painting from the University of Michigan and continued her print education at NYU. Prior to her move to Colorado, she printed at Tyler Graphics (NYC) with artists Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell. She has taught numerous print workshops at institutions across the country including University of Denver, Boston University, Scripps College, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Women’s Studio Workshop, Brandeis University and Northwestern University.
