In this workshop, with an introduction to the basic Japanese calligraphy strokes as well as some free-style variations, the students will learn to practice some words in Kana (Japanese alphabets) or Kanji (Chinese characters) and be encouraged to explore ways to use the strokes of calligraphy in their own unique ways.

Tokyo-born Mamiko Ikeda is a cultural educator, artist, and animator. Early in her life she began studying shodo (Japanese calligraphy) with her mother, master calligrapher Shotei Miura, as her guide. Drawn to the American West to study Native American culture and storytelling, Ikeda earned a Master's Degree from the University of Denver in Liberal Arts, specializing in American Indian Studies. Mamiko's art and animation movies have appeared in a variety of Colorado venues. http://www.mamikoikeda.com

Ikeda, born in a small subtropical island of Yoron, Japan moved to the States in 1978. He earned B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His works are exhibited nationally and internationally and can be seen locally at William Havu Gallery. He received many Artist Residency such as Skowhegan, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, PlatteForum, RedLine and Create Denver presented the Residency Project & Exhibition at McNichols CivicCenter Building. http://www.homareikeda.com/
