In this workshop, with an introduction to the basic Japanese calligraphy strokes as well as some free-style variations, the students will learn to practice some words in Kana (Japanese alphabets) or Kanji (Chinese characters) and be encouraged to explore ways to use the strokes of calligraphy in their own unique ways.

  • This class will take place online via Zoom. The instructor will provide the Zoom link prior to class starting.
  • -1 newsprint pad (9x12 inches or larger)
  • -bamboo brushes (the substitutes can be brush pens or pointed painting brushes.)
  • -Sumi ink (Indian ink or thinner black ink)
  • -paper weight to hold paper when practicing brush strokes.

Tokyo-born Mamiko Ikeda is a cultural educator, artist, and animator. Early in her life she began studying shodo (Japanese calligraphy) with her mother, master calligrapher Shotei Miura, as her guide. Drawn to the American West to study Native American culture and storytelling, Ikeda earned a Master's Degree from the University of Denver in Liberal Arts, specializing in American Indian Studies.
