How do you go about using data, even personal data to create an abstract patterned collage using hand-cut, hand-dyed materials? We’ll work through each step in the process, using memory and tracking to gather location data and create a rough sketch to follow. Discuss color mapping and select color palette based on time and place. Using 100% cotton paper, we’ll use hot-water color dyes to create some of the natural color materials for the collage. Over the two days we’ll produce a finished collage piece on panel that is both personal and a new type of data portrait in hand-dyed, cut paper collage.

  • 12”x12” cradled wood panel, gesso finish, preferably ¾-7/8” deep. Like Ampersand, DaVinci or similar
  • Acrylic FLUID matte medium – at least 16 oz
  • Scissors, small pair of paper scissors that are easy to hold – bring multiple pair if you have them
  • 1” paint brush (inexpensive) for applying base layer paper and matte medium (regular 1” house paint brush is a good option)
  • 2 Plastic container with a lid, like a cottage chess, yogurt container
  • Exacto knife with new sharp blade
  • 2-3 pair disposable vinyl or latex gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Apron – for sure bring an apron, plus don’t wear clothes that you’d worry about getting dye or matte medium on them
  • Collage materials – cardstock weight paper in colors if you have them, we’ll dye enough paper in class to use, but extra colors are always good, can be small pieces
