Altering found objects using oxidizing paints and patinas can add interest or continuity when creating compositions, plus something about metal imparts its own gravitas. We will be working with reactive copper, bronze or iron paints to make true verdigris and rust finishes on non-metal surfaces like wood, cardboard or plastic. We’ll also investigate easy faux metal finishes. Then we will use our “metallized” components along with other objects to create sculptural works of assemblage art.

  • Email questions at info@artistmichellelamb.com or checkout their art at www.artistmichellelamb.com
  • Substrate in which to assemble your parts: ie, cigar box or any shallow wood box or lids, wooden trays, flatware organizer, birdhouse, papier mache or chipboard shapes, hardboard picture art that’s at least one to two inches deep like cradled board.
  • Found objects such as rigid plastic/resin/wood animals/figurines/toys/masks/hands etc. Chipboard/wood numbers or letters, game pieces, unusual kitchen utensils, paper ephemera, machine parts, intriguing charms or baubles, decorative metal or wood trims, mementos or knickknacks. Use your imagination! I like hunting stuff at thrift stores, garage sales or walking about. Don’t forget that junk drawer or jar with miscellaneous hardware in the garage. Bring stuff to share for the “junk heap”,
  • Your usual kit of cheap paintbrushes, latex gloves, small paint/water containers, rags, sea sponge, scissors or Xacto knife. Hanging hardware like D rings, cleats, eye screws and wire or sawtooth hangers, small screwdrivers. Teacher will bring hardware, tools and power tools along with junk, paints and glues for sharing.
  • Optional but recommended:
  • Modern Masters Metal Effects Kits in Copper, Bronze or Iron via internet sites like dickblick.com, hobbylobby.com, amazon.com or pickup in person at Guiry’s or Hobby Lobby (call ahead). You can start with one 2oz kit to see which finish you like best.

I'm a multi-disciplinary artist that has created several types of art, from sculpting small buttons molded for manufacturing to a 41' wide x 7' high tall outdoor public art mural. I've crafted a life-size carousel horse from scratch and conversely, have taken apart obsolete machinery, reassembling the parts into reliquaries. I also do soft sculptures entirely opposite of my assemblage which is predominantly hard metals, woods and glass.
