This course is to introduce Japanese calligraphy as art, including demonstrating/practicing deferent brush strokes and brush exercises, which make you feel space between strokes. In the actual course, you will practice Japanese calligraphy through learning balance, flow, rhythm and some Japanese language. Those brush movements can be applied to your own mark makings for your art.
- Introduction of the basics of Japanese calligraphy and the tools
Demonstration of different Japanese calligraphy strokes
Brush exercises
Actual writing of some characters
- Please bring 1 newsprint pad (9x12 inches or larger) bamboo brushes (if you have any, or you can borrow in the class.)
Other materials; a paper weight, sumi calligraphy ink, rice paper and felt mat will be prepared by the instructor.
Mamiko Ikeda
Tokyo-born Mamiko Ikeda is a cultural educator, artist, and animator. Early in her life she began studying shodo (Japanese calligraphy) with her mother, master calligrapher Shotei Miura, as her guide. Drawn to the American West to study Native American culture and storytelling, Ikeda earned a Master's Degree from the University of Denver in Liberal Arts, specializing in American Indian Studies. Mamiko's art and animation movies have appeared in a variety of Colorado venues.
