In a world of clothing being discarded because of wear and tear I have another solution-- mend or stitch the wear and tear creatively. Use decorative embroidery floss to basket weave a hole closed, or open the hole up with a blanket stitch. In this course you will learn the basic stitches, favorite embroidery floss, needles to use, and 'to use or not to use' an embroidery hoop.

Practice sustainability and give new life to your cherished textiles. Mending matters is a course in slow hand stitching to repair and create interesting ways of adding stitching to enhance or cover up holes in textiles so that the textile can be used, reused and revived.

  • Students should have basic hand sewing skills, & know how to thread a needle and tie a knot.
  • Bring a project/textile that has wear and tear or holes that you would like to enhance by stitching. I will supply needles, 1 spool of thread per student and 1 embroidery hoop per student. If you have thread you want to use bring it. If you sew with a thimble, bring it as well. Please bring your own scissors, I will not supply those. If you want to share your textiles we welcome all kinds of examples so we can brainstorm how to mend them.

Brooks has been creating, professionally designing, and selling her brand of clothing labeled Brooks LTD. for more than 45 years in Denver, Colorado.

Brooks Ltd founded in 1974, the dream of the sole designer and visionary, Brooks Luby, a Colorado native. Educated at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Brooks draws inspiration from the world around her. As a professional fashion designer or couturier, her awareness of advances in fabric technology as well as changes in fashion influences and lifestyle keep her a step ahead of other design labels.

The newest trends become woven into her ever-changing collections.

Currently she is incorporating recycling, hand stitching and mending into her own designs to help the textiles remain in wardrobes instead of the landfill.

An independent boutique owner since 1974, Brooks has sold her clothing designs nationally to Saks Fifth Avenue and other boutique stores. In 1976 she pioneered a salon trend by opening a designer boutique within a long-time high-end Denver department store. From 1979 through 2001, savvy women frequented her independent Cherry Creek North boutique, a mecca for the well dressed and in-the-know. Since 2002, clients make their appointments individually in Brooks’ private atelier in Lower Downtown Denver.

Brooks’ purpose in this life is to help humans feel good about themselves and their body by expressing who they are through how they dress. Learning mending will benefit our landfill and give students the ability to revive their textiles.
