Watercolor and Oil Collagraph Monoprints
Students will learn collagraph platemaking using plexi and mat boards as substrates, including using carborundum aquatint, and various inking techniques such as relief rolling, wiping, rubbings, and à la poupée (multiple simultaneous colors). We will start with a brief introduction with watercolor monotypes, that can be used with the collagraph technique.
Day One
We will start with a brief description and “show and tell” of example prints. (30 minutes)
Demo: How to prepare the vellum substrate with Gum Arabic
Mixing paints with Gum. Paint application.
Students work on 9 x 12 pieces of vellum.
Demo: paper preparation and calendaring
Arches 88 paper
Pull first round of prints.
Afternoon demo: Making collagraph plates to go with the watercolor technique.
Finish all plate building and coating with acrylic by the end of the first day, so the plates can dry sufficiently.
Recap first day.
Day Two
Discuss additional use of cut stencils – blocking, adding more color
Demo: ink application onto plates, using tarlatan and tissue
Rolling ink onto stencils with brayers
Relief rolling collagraph plates
Everyone will print as many pieces as possible the remainder of the day.
