Hernandez, Guadalupe

Guadalupe Hernandez (b.1993) is a Houston-based multidisciplinary artist who earned his MFA from Houston Baptist University in 2021. Hernandez was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, before relocating to Pleasanton, Texas, a small city south of San Antonio, in 1998. Despite moving to the United States, Hernandez maintained a deep connection to his Mexican heritage and customs through time-honored familial traditions. Hernandez’s practice examines his cultural identity by reinterpreting childhood memories and family stories connecting his past and offering greater meaning to his present. Through the use of photographic references accumulated over several years, retracing the markets, street scenes, and people of his homeland Hernandez creates elaborate Papel Picado portraits and figurative oil paintings with gestural brushwork.

Hernandez most recently has participated in a mentorship program with the U.S. Latinx Art Forum. He was also awarded an artists residency with the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft where he will be exploring the tradition of Papel Picado and paper making this summer. In the past he has participated as an artist in residence with the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, TX and an Artist on Site with the Asia Society Texas Center. Hernandez works a have been exhibited at the Alexandria Museum of Art, Alexandria, LA, Asia Society Texas Center, Houston, TX, Beeville Art Museum, Beeville, TX, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston, TX, Houston Holocaust Museum, Houston, TX, Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX, Wichita Falls, TX. Currently he has a solo exhibition at the Beeville Art Museum, and Son de Allá y Son de Acá exhibition at the Chicano Park Museum in San Diego, CA.

Guadalupe Hernandez’s work is included in the Collection of the Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX, the City of San Antonio Public Collection, San Antonio, TX, and the Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ.
