In a new twist on our Visiting Artist Series, we're visiting the artist! Artventures invites you to get out of town and meet artists throughout the state (and beyond). Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging accommodations.

Trinidad, CO is still a relatively undiscovered and charming ‘old-west’ style town with a lot of beautiful historic architecture, located just off I-25 on the southern border of Colorado. The A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art, an old dry goods store from the early 1900s, with most of its original features intact, became home in 1981 to the paintings and memorabilia of local resident and cowboy artist, Arthur Roy Mitchell. Today, the Museum is excited to share Mitchell's story and beautiful works and claim its rightful position on the list of worthy contributors to Colorado's rich, western history.

It is in this setting, in our recently activated 3rd floor exhibition space, that we will host an abstract painting workshop. Classes will offer basic painting guidance from instructor Karen Roehl, with an emphasis on abstract painting techniques that will include fun and quick loosening-up exercises designed to help participants “let go” and unleash their creative instinct.

In addition, access to behind-the-scene archives, a tour of the Museum with a fun and informative talk by its Executive Director, Allyson Sheumaker, and First Friday festivities will be offered. Other amenities in the area include hiking, biking, and live music.

We at the Museum, invite you to come paint, explore and be inspired by the beauty of this area and experience how the influence of an authentic, old western town might inspire your creativity.

  • Treat yourself to a weekend of inspired painting in an old-timey western-influenced environment, at the A.R. Mitchell Museum in the beautiful town of Trinidad Colorado.

    Schedule

    • Friday & Saturday, June 7-8, 10am-5pm class - bring your supplies and meet at the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art 150 E Main St, Trinidad, CO 81082
    • First Friday night stroll
    • Sunday, June 9, 10am-12pm wrap up and critique
  • Supplies students need to provide:

    •        Acrylic paint – colors of choice, at least 4 or 5, plus titanium white and black

NOTE: Abstract instruction will be given using acrylics due to their fast drying qualities important to a number of techniques presented.

Many colors can be mixed from the following 5:

    Cadmium Yellow Light or Pale; Alizarin Crimson; Ultramarine Blue; Burnt Umber;

    Titanium White

    •        Brushes – Range of sizes, but include at least one large, filbert or flat, STIFF bristle brush approximately 3/4" wide, (not natural or soft fibers), also a household painting brush, 1.25" - 2" wide (those cheap hardware store brushes that run just a couple dollars each)

    •        Palette knives (Quantity: 2)

    •        Sealable container for paints. (Masterson makes a good palette that's sort of like a tupperware container. There's a thin sponge that fits in the bottom and special waxed paper palette sheets sit on top of that. Helps keep paints transportable and usable for quite awhile.)

    •        Substrate – Gessoed stretched canvas, or canvas pad sheets, or board. Size should be limited due to restraints of class room. Something approx 20”x30”, in that range, works well.

    •        Another small Canvas Pad - approximately 8 x 10" that we'll use for exercises in class

    •        Container for water (a little larger is better, 1- or 2-quart plastic containers)

    •        Masking tape

    •        Paper towels or rags
    •        Destop easel (many paintboxes can be set up as an easel, or an inexpensive one can be purchased at art stores)

    Optional:

    •        Graphite sticks – at least a couple different “hardnesses” and different sizes

    •        Ink – black India or Sumi ink

    •        Oil Bar – black and/or white, or color of choice

    •        Oil pastels – small box of assorted colors or 2 or 3 individual pastels in colors of choice

    •        China marker pencils – white, black, other color if desired

    •        Nitrile gloves – really good to protect your hands and keep them clean (Oil Bars are particularly messy.)
