Visiting Artist Series: Exploring Watercolor with Telagio Baptista

Learn the basics, starting with a single-color and jumping right into a multi-color approach, working together one-on-one to create some beautiful art.

FIRST DAY - Embark on a profound journey exploring monochromatic painting with a single color.

What you will learn:

1. Learning how to understand and create the use of different tonal values with just one color.

2. The importance of values, not color.

SECOND DAY - The pleasure of painting with a limited palette by utilizing only three colors.

What you will learn:

1. How to create a rainbow of colors with red, yellow, and blue paint.

2. How to give your painting a fresh and vivid look using a limited palette.

THIRD DAY - A creative journey into no-fear portraits, your favorite fuzzy pet or animal of your choice. Bring a few B&W and full-color prints

(8-1/2x11) on bond paper.
What you will learn:

1. How to develop your own signature - realistic or impressionistic.

2. How to blend hard and soft edges

  • Please bring the following supplies.

    PAINTS

    - Black or Brown tube paint is recommended for the 1st day.

    - Alizarin Crimson (red)

    - Yellow (any shade of yellow)

    - Blue (Prussian blue)

All three colors are recommended for the 2nd & 3rd day - bring any red, yellow & blue you have.

    PAPER

    - For good results, I recommend using a 140lb cold-pressed pad that measures around 11 inches by 14 inches.

    - For best results, I recommend using a 300lb cold-press pad - fewer peaks and valleys when painting. A bit pricy. (optional)

    BRUSHES

    - Rounds - #1,#8 & #12

    - Flats - 1/2" & 1"

    Purchase synthetic sable brushes.

    PALETTE

    - Plastic with multiple large wells for paint and mixing, or porcelain plates with three delivers are the best. This product is easy to clean and does not leave any stains as plastic.

    RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES

    - Gatorboard to tape paper, too. The foam core is good to use.

    - Black carbon transfer paper

    - Small pencil sharpener

    - #2H pencil

    - Pencil eraser

    - Two water containers

    - Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

    - Kitchen paper towels

    - Artist tape or masking tape - 1/2" wide

    - Watercolor wheel

Recently relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, from Sacramento, California.

This is the story of a watercolor artist's journey toward pursuing his passion. He had owned a graphic design studio in Hawaii for twenty years and was also a symphony's concertmaster violist. Additionally, he had toured the South Pacific as a professional golfer before finally dedicating himself to painting.

During his formative years, he discovered his passion for visual arts. His artistic abilities were acknowledged when his paintings won national awards in high school. As a result, he was awarded a scholarship to the Fine Art Institute in San Francisco, and he completed his education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, with a BFA.

Telagio is a talented watercolor artist who has won various regional, national, and international juried art competitions. He uses a limited color palette and different atmospheric painting techniques to paint portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes. Telagio often incorporates negative space in his art to allow the painting to breathe and create a specific mood and feeling;

Every image he makes tells a unique story.

Telagio exclusively uses watercolor as his medium of choice. He finds it to be a magical and exotic medium that allows for limitless creativity. His watercolor paintings range from realistic depictions to more impressionistic styles.

As an artist, Telagio is open to new ideas and approaches in perceiving breakthroughs and understanding human connection. He believes that his best work is still ahead of him.

Telagio offers private and group watercolor workshops in Omaha, surrounding areas, and other states. He has also served as a juror for art shows and has ongoing gallery exhibitions.

Encouragement and support for each student characterize his teaching method. He brings his God-given and professional painting talent and enthusiasm to his workshops, encouraging his students to speak "loud and clear" with their hearts and brushes.
