Join Sheila in this 10 Week slab building class in creating decorative wall pieces that can hang in your homes to match your current aesthetic decor. By the end of class students will be able to take one of a kind wall hangings that are sure to be conversation starters at their next gathering or a unique personalized gift for a loved one.



  • Syllabus
    • Learn basic slab building skills
    • develop concept for art piece intended
    • research and sketch
    • develop templates
    • choose and apply surface treatment
    Depending on student skill level and pace of working, this can be a diptych or a triptych.

    Each class includes a standard weekly lab fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to the standard lab fee, students will need to purchase clay through the registration office at ASLD and must be done in person: $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. No low-fire clays or Cone 6 white stoneware may be used at ASLD.


  • Currently enrolled students have access to Ceramic open studio for a $5 fee. Please see the whiteboard in the hallway for updated open studio hours.

  • Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges may be available for purchase at ASLD on a first come, first served basis. We welcome you to bring any new, used, found and repurposed tools you may have.

  • -Dishwashing gloves to use for end of class clean up

  • If you purchase your own tools, we suggest you assemble a basic tool kit that includes:

  • - Potter's rib (wood and or rubber)
  • - Metal rib
  • - Wood modeling tool
  • - Needle tool
  • - Trimming tool(s)
  • - Throwing sponge

Mungai, Sheila

Sheila Mungai is a Kenyan-Born Colorado based artist. She attended Kenyatta University for two years in 1994 -1995. The university was temporarily shut down, during which period she immigrated to the United States.

 

In 2015 she resumed her pursuit for her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics at Metro State University of Denver in Colorado, graduating in spring of 2019.

 

Her multicultural experience gained through her Kenyan childhood and early adulthood experience, and living in America has provided a wealth of content to explore social issues and interactions, expressed in clay and other mediums. The social issues tackled mainly revolve around identity.
