This course is designed for students at the beginner and intermediate level to hone and develop their conceptual drawing skills by applying their knowledge of creating the illusion of light, shadow and atmosphere in their portraiture. We will be covering the start, middle and ‘end’ phase of developing the illusion of form and atmosphere with graphite/charcoal. Student’s progress along that spectrum depending on the efficiency and accuracy they bring to each stage. Our focus will be drawing the portrait, but the concepts practiced will be applicable to all other subject matter. This class is about learning the language of form so you can write your own poetry with constructive integrity.

  • Fundamental drawing experience required.
  • Paper:
    Canson Mi-Tientes Paper- 24x30 sheets -cut down to a variety of sizes no smaller than 12x15, light -cool or warm tone (NO DARK TONES) you can purchase sheets at Meininger’s, and they will cut them for you.
    OR
    Sketchbook:
    Stillman and Birn Zeta Series Hardcover Sketchbook, 8.25 x 11.75
    Plastic or metal clamps from the hardware store to secure paper/ sketchbook to easel
    Mechanical Eraser

    Charcoal:

    Willow or vine charcoal sticks

    Compressed charcoal (Generals brand)soft (at least 3 pencils)

    kneaded eraser

    a few soft small paint brushes (size 2-4ish)

Jen focused seriously on ballet and modern dance throughout her childhood and adult life. She has a BA in Performance Art from the University of MD. Starling discovered painting later in life, but no stranger to discipline, she has dedicated herself to a demanding studio practice, showing her work, and teaching at the Art Student League of Denver, and ReCreative Denver. In addition, she has numerous online courses available. Her work is collected by private collectors in the US and Europe, and resides in the city of Loveland Colorado’s public art collection.
