Create a softcover wraparound book with two caterpillar stitches running around the cover to hold in the text block. In this fun and playful stitching, the binding focuses attention on the beauty of a braided binding that creates a caterpillar-looking creature. Unlike most caterpillar bindings the signatures in this structure are bound with the book pages themselves instead of just on the covers. Using a special handmade paper for this binding gives a natural look to the book and draws attention to the uniqueness of the paper. Students will also see samples of artists” books created using this binding style. Prerequisite: some sewing experience is very helpful and the ability to handle a needle using pressure.

  • Course Structure:
    - welcome/vocabulary
    - students choose provided materials & prep binding parts
    - book sewing / assistance
    - create a book closure / finish book
  • Please bring:
    a button or small stone (1/2 - 3/4" round)
Tools recommended (scissors, pencil, xacto or snap blade knife, 12" ruler)
