In this experimental, exploratory class you will learn how to use tetrapak cartons (milk cartons) and paperboard to make intaglio prints (drypoint, monotype and collorgraph). With the tetrapak plates, we can do drypoint prints a process where you use a tool to make lines and texture in the plate- anywhere you make a mark will print a line. With tetrapak and other discarded plastics, we can do monotypes which are one-off prints made with whatever you draw or paint in printmaking ink. Finally, collographs are made by mixing acrylic medium and carborundum to paint on the surface of a plate. Collographs are also great for including fabric and other things as texture. People with an interest in fibers, drawing, painting, and experimentation will do well here. This is a great place to start for beginners- advanced students can make more complicated or multi-plate prints. Printmaking definitely has a learning curve and it’s possible that there will be some frustration in the process. Know that it’s also an exciting challenge and that you will be supported. If you can, please bring your own paperboard (cereal boxes and the like) and tetrapak to use. I’ll have some available, but if you want to work on a big piece (please do!), it would be helpful if you brought your own stuff.

  • Session 1: check in with everyone and introductions/class expectations. Demo of collographs. There will be plenty of time to print! We’ll close with another check in to see about questions and things that may have come up.

Session 2: check in, answer questions. Demo of monotypes or drypoint, depending on interest. Printing time, and a check in at the end.

Session 3: check in and answer questions. Demo of monotypes or drypoint, whichever didn’t get a demo last week. Conversation of combining plates to make one image. Printing time and check in at the end.

Session 4: check in and answer any questions. Further discussion about multi plate prints. Demo of chine colle if there is interest. Printing time, check in at the end. Group critique if there is interest.

If there is a specific kind of paper you would like to use, you may bring your own.

  • *New printmakers- please check in with instructor prior to purchase of materials!*

To bring: sketchbook & drawing supplies. Paper towels or rags for cleanup. Tetrapak or paperboard to use in class. Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained/dirty. We have aprons available, but it is inevitable that you’ll get some ink on you at some point.

Ren (they/them) is an artist based in Denver, CO. They have a BFA in Fibers and Drawing from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins although they primarily work as a printmaker and potter right now. They think that the best way to learn is to experiment, make mistakes, and gain some knowledge rather than seeking perfection. When not in the studio, Ren likes to ride bikes, pet dogs, learn about science and nature, and try new things.
