Block printing is one of the oldest was to create repeated images! If you have ever wanted to make stamps, patches, repeating patterns, cards or any sort of reproducible images, this is the perfect place to start. Relief printing is a low stakes and versatile print medium that you can continue to use without a studio. Come and explore various types of substrates, inks and tools to start your carving journey! We will explore several methods and materials for printing that can be replicated at home or in a studio space.
No print experience is necessary, but if you have already printed and are are looking to expand on the basics or trouble shoot issues you’ve had, you are welcome to join.
Syllabus:
We will start by introducing the carving process and how if will be applied to various carving surfaces. Students will practice carving and printing through low cost and easily obtainable materials to explore basics of printing. We will then move to more traditional print mediums, demonstrate how to roll on even layers of ink and a few ways to print onto both fabric and paper. We will also cover a few ways to make multi color images! If students have any images they would like to print or specific paper or fabric they would like to print on, they are welcome to bring them.
