The goal of this workshop is to have fun playing with illustration techniques. The media is open to any painting or drawing material you wish to work with.

We will focus on the art of drawing and painting elves, angels, gremlins, gnomes, goblins, trolls, and other imaginary creatures. In this workshop, we will play with the traditional techniques illustrators use to invent imaginary creatures, and place them in imaginary settings.

  • The first day of class, we will play with ways to distorted the head and face. You will need some photos from home that you can use as subject matter.
    In the second day of class, we'll play with alternate proportions for the body to create creatures that are not fully human. Time permitting, our goal will be to put the heads and bodies together.
    On the last day, we will play with possible settings or backgrounds. The goal will be to combine your imaginary creature with the background or setting you created.

    *This class will meet on Thursday 7/11 - 8/1.
    Class will be held in studio 108 from 7/11 - 25.
    *Class will be held in studio 206 on 8/1.

Doug Dawson is a noted pastel expert and the author of Capturing Light and Color in Pastel. Dawson's work has been published in Southwest Art, The Artist's Magazine, Tonal Value and many other books and magazines.
