Portrait Fundamentals From Life

Drawing faces is hard! If you are frustrated and unhappy with your work, or just starting out, this is the class for you! Let us get back to the basics by simplifying what we see. In this class we will focus on proportions, values, transitions, and learning how charcoal behaves. We will draw a model's portrait each week using light and shadow to show form.
- -General proportions
-Plumb lines
-Value scale & shapes -
Transitions (soft/hard. fast/slow)
-Practice!
- -Willow or vine charcoal sticks
-Compressed charcoal (Generals brand)soft (at least 3 pencils)
-Kneaded eraser
-A few soft small paint brushes (size 2-4ish)
-Blue shop towels (not regular paper towels!)
-Paper Canson Mi-Tientes Paper- 24x30 sheets -cut down to a variety of sizes no smaller than 9"x 12" light
*Cool or warm tone (NO DARK TONES) you can purchase sheets at Meininger’s, and they will cut them for you
-Plastic or metal clamps from the hardware store to secure paper/ sketchbook to easel OR tape
Jen Starling
Jen focused seriously on ballet and modern dance throughout her childhood and adult life. She has a BA in Performance Art from the University of MD. Starling discovered painting later in life, but no stranger to discipline, she has dedicated herself to a demanding studio practice, showing her work, and teaching at the Art Student League of Denver, and ReCreative Denver. In addition, she has numerous online courses available. Her work is collected by private collectors in the US and Europe, and resides in the city of Loveland Colorado’s public art collection.
