Studio Landscape with Oil and Pastel

Adult Course | Registration opens 4/1/2025 7:00 AM MST

Master the skills specific to studio landscape painting. Materials are presented in a way to help the beginner get started, as well as helping the experienced artist take their work to the next level. Each month begins with an entire class devoted to demonstration in either pastel or oil.

The other weeks begin with a brief presentation or illustration covering topics such as design, principles of color, handling materials, different techniques and procedures, separating spaces into planes, creating unity in a painting, color harmony, creating exciting color, linear perspective, and including figures and animals in landscape.

  • Learning Objectives:
    By the end of each class, each student will have learned a skill related to successfully painting landscape paintings with oil and pastel.



  • Please bring:


  • For oil painters:
    - Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, Titanium White Yellow Ocher, Transparent Red Oxide

  • - Canvas covered boards, or boards primed with gesso, or stretched canvas


  • For pastel painters:

    - A selection of soft pastels. If you have a starter set you may need to expand your selection of light pastels and your selection of dark pastels.

  • - A masonite board to attach you paper

  • - Masking tape

  • - Toned pastel paper: I suggest warm tones, burnt siennas or yellow ochers

Doug Dawson is a noted pastel expert and the author of Capturing Light and Color in Pastel. Dawson's work has been published in Southwest Art, The Artist's Magazine, Tonal Value and many other books and magazines.
