Oils for the Absolute Beginner

Adult Course | Registration opens 4/1/2025 7:00 AM MST

Oils can be an intimidating medium, especially if you have never used them before. This workshop is designed for the absolute beginner with no previous experience, but if you already paint in oils, this workshop can be a good refresher. This is a hands-on workshop in which you will be painting and hopefully by the time the workshop is done you’ll have the confidence and the necessary knowledge to go out on your own and start creating with this wonderful medium.

You will learn about materials including paints, brushes, painting surfaces, mediums and solvents, paint application, basic color theory, values, how to start a painting and more. On the second day bring a simple item to paint from, it can be a fruit, a vase, a tea cup, etc. Please no flowers.

  • Learning Objectives:
    The student will have understanding on brushes, techniques, and starting an oil painting.
  • * Oil Paints:
    * Please avoid Michael’s brand “Artist’s Loft” oil paint
    * Titanium white
    * Cadmium yellow
    * Cadmium red
    * Alizarin Crimson
    * Ultramarine blue
    * Raw Umber
    * Any other color you would like to bring

    * Palette knife - 2 to 3 inches long, the most flexible that you can find
    * Vine charcoal

    * Odorless mineral spirits - I recommend Gamsol.
    * Sealable container for Gamsol
    * Brushes:

    * Various sizes of Flats

    * Glass or wood palette - Please avoid paper palettes - I recommend 12”x16” Masterson’s Palette box which can be found at Meininger’s and Guiry’s. Fitting glass palette for it can also be found at Guiry’s.
    * canvases or panels: two 8"x10" and one 9"x12"

    * Recommended but not necessary:
    * Gloves
    * Apron or clothing that you don’t mind ruining with paint.
Cristian Mora

To Cristian Mora, art is the search for truth and beauty in reality and imagination, in the natural and the unnatural, in the benign and the eldritch. A native of San Ramón, Costa Rica, he started painting rainforest scenes as a young child. His love to create only grew from there as he experimented with and discovered new styles and mediums.

Working primarily in oils, Cristian incorporates a vast array of styles, subjects, and techniques, including Alla Prima work, plein air painting, city and landscapes, figure painting, and imaginative dark realism. He explores not only these but also other visual arts such as photography and digital media.

Cristian’s studio is in Denver, CO, where he lives with his wife, Emily. He teaches at the Art Students League of Denver as well as private lessons. To see more of his work or to contact the artist, please visit cristianmora.com or follow @moraart on Instagram.
