Can You Handle it?
Adult Course | Available
Love making mugs but wish you could practice your handle making skills without potentially ruining your hard work? This class has you covered! We will start with a pre-made leather hard cylinder that you will use to attach a variety of handles that you created. The idea here is to practice attaching handles and try different styles that you may like. Each cylinder will then be bisque fired and you will have your very own handle library. Cylinders will be small enough for you to pick up by each individual handle so you can really get a feel for how they will work on an object.
Students will hone their handle making skills by pulling, coiling, or slab building a variety of handles. Additionally, we will cover how to attach and finesse handles and discuss ways to minimize the possibility of cracking at the joins.
Things to note:
We will be using reclaim clay only in this class. All cylinders are prepared for students beforehand and we cannot accommodate requests for specific kinds of clay. Because handles have to sit for a while before attaching, the instructor will send out an idea document prior to class so you can look at examples and have ideas ready when you arrive.
bring your favorite clay tools, sketchbook with ideas, and any examples you would like to try.
Doing research prior to class will lead to more success- look at the resources document that comes with the class and other mugs online. The Rosenfield Collection is an excellent starting point. https://www.rosenfieldcollection.com
Each class includes a standard weekly lab fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to the standard lab fee, students will be charged a $15 fee which will cover the class clay as well as the cylinders which will be provided.
No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
New students, arrive 15-30 minutes early to your first class in order to allow time for the purchase of clay.
This workshop does not provide students access to open studio.

Ren Cannon
Ren (they/them) is an artist based in Denver, CO. They have a BFA in Fibers and Drawing from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins although they primarily work as a printmaker and potter right now. They think that the best way to learn is to experiment, make mistakes, and gain some knowledge rather than seeking perfection. When not in the studio, Ren likes to ride bikes, pet dogs, learn about science and nature, and try new things.
