Initially we will try to assess the students involvement with collage. It is suggested to bring some of your work to show. The instructor will bring in examples of my three dimensional collages to show approaches to pushing a primarily two dimensional medium of collage into sculptural forms.
Next, the instructor will create a series of demos, using gel medium as an adhesive. He shows how to cut and adhere paper to fit the back surface of a wooden box along with showing how to cover a block of wood with a sheet of paper, followed by covering shapes that have curved surfaces.
There are two suggested ways of working, the first being working within a pre made structure, such as a box. The second, covering a variety of shapes with paper as a first step, then creating a composition, basically working from the inside outward. After a satisfactory composition is realized, the instructor demonstrates how to join the various parts together.
Students will then start working, making suggestions when needed. There will be tools and materials available to students new to collage to have plenty to work with.
Each student has a six foot table to work on so that they can work on several small pieces at a time. By the end of the day, students should be able complete at least one, perhaps two finished pieces.
