Landscape Painting Nuts and Bolts

This workshop is for those who already enjoy working with pastels and/or oils, or committed students who wish to experiment with these mediums.

Landscape painting Nuts and Bolts: We will practice the important fundamentals of Studio landscape painting to help us get from the Concept to completion. Ideas, Design, Values, color to finishing a studio landscape painting.


We will focus on the how and why of landscape painting, working from landscape photos and plein air studies. Students will improve their composition skills, understand the importance of simplification of shapes and masses, learn about values, atmospheric perspective, create a center of interest, the use of edges, drawing and color.


  • Students registering for this class should have some basic drawing and painting skills
    This class will be held at Parker Arts, Culture & Events Center: 20000 Pikes Peak Avenue, Parker, CO 80138.
  • Oil Painting Supplies
    This is a list of the oil painting equipment I have come to prefer. I have
    found that buying quality products has had a big impact on my work both in
    terms of ease of handling and saving money over the years.

    Easels (your choice of):
     Manfrotto Bogen tripod (800-473-8098) with a Leder Easel and painting box.
     Julian French easel – half box

    Canvas Panels – I mostly use oil primed linen Claussen #66 mounted to birch wood or
    gator board. Please bring 2-3 panels per day in your choice of sizes 8x10, 9x12, 10x12,
    11x14 Outdoors we will be doing small studies on the canvas panels. For Indoor studio
    work bring your choice of sizes in panel or stretched canvas 11x 14,12x16,16x20.
    I purchase my panels through Source Tek (800-587-5462)

    Brushes- I enjoy using Bristle brushes made by Princeton and Signet (Robert
    Simmons) suggested sizes

    Odorless turpentine
    Brush cleaner – Holbein small or medium

    Small trash bags (Paper or plastic bags)
    Small Sketchbook (for thumbnails & note taking) 5x7 or 8.5x11
    Sharpie Marker-Black

    Pastels Supplies
    A good assortment of pastels. I use mostly Rembrandt, Nu Pastel, Girault
    pastels for my plein air palette. (To hold your pastels, I recommend a small
    Heilman box, but use what works for you).
    Your favorite drawing tool. I use a bristre Conte Crayon.
    An outdoor easel. I use a Julian French easel half box.
    Your favorite pastel surface. I use Canson Moonstone or UArt sanded pastel
    paper 400 grit.
    Tape to a lightweight board using 1 inch Masking tape. Sizes 8x10, 9x12 or 11x14. Larger sizes for studio workshop. Bring 2 per day.
    Kneaded Eraser
    Viva paper towels smooth
    1 inch Scotch masking tape
    Small sketchbook 5 x 7 or 6 x 9 - Larger sketchbook for Studio workshop 8.5 x 11
    Sharpie markers Ultra Fine point and Fine Point
    Small viewfinder (I like View Catcher).
    Sunblock for skin protection
    Dress for the weather and to protect your skin
    Bug spray
Lorenzo Chavez

Lorenzo Chavez was born in New Mexico.  His inherited connection to the colorful and historic Southwest as well as seeing the Taos Society of Artists works as a young boy was the catalyst for his art career.  He graduated with honors from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1983 and continued his art education at the newly founded Arts Students League of Denver starting in 1987. 


Chavez has been an active professional fine artist for 40 years. He has participated in many national invitational group exhibitions including the Pastel Society of America at The National Arts Club in New York City, Artists of America Show in Denver, Plein Air Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibitions, Albuquerque Art Museum, Gilcrease Museum, Butler Art Museum, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the Brinton Museum, the Booth Museum, Yellowstone Art Museum, Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum, Steamboat Art Museum,  Taos Art Museum,  Laguna Art Museum, Phippen Museum Arizona Cape Cod Art Museum, High Desert Museum Oregon, Leigh Yawke Museum, Hockaday Art Museum Montana, Colorado History Museum, Artist of the West Exhibitions- Featured Artist  Pioneer Museum Colorado Springs, A.R. Mitchell Museum, Coors Western Art Show in Denver, Trailside Galleries, Legacy Gallery and Settlers West Gallery, Blue Rain Gallery, Invitationals.  In addition, he was featured in a successful on-man show at the C.M. Russell Museum.  He has participated successfully in several C.M. Russell Art Auctions and Coeur d’Alene Art Auctions.  His work is featured in articles in Southwest Art, Artists of the West, Pastel Journal, American Artist, Plein Air Magazine and Art-Talk. Books include, Pure Pastel 1&2, Pratique de Arts France, Colorado Landscapes, Beautiful Landscapes Painted Outdoors.


Chavez was raised in Albuquerque and has an affection for the surrounding vicinity.  He has many fond memories of time spent hiking and running in these areas and feels that it was a major influence in his decision to become a landscape painter.


His suggestive renderings and fluent technique in both oil and pastel have earned him numerous awards and many devoted collectors throughout the United States and he is considered by many to be the west’s premier pastel painter.  He has been the recipient of awards and honors from such notable groups at the Pastel Society of America, California Art Club, American Impressionist Society, the Russell Art Auction, numerous pastel societies across the United States, Society de Pastelists France, the C.M. Russell Auction, and Artists of the West Pioneer Museum. 


Chavez is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Signature Member of the California Art Club, Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, and the Pastel Society of Spain.  He was also a member of the Northwest Rendezvous of Art and a past Signature member of The Plein Air Painters of America,
