Vibrant Layers: Exploring Colored Pencil Techniques

Adult Course | Registration opens 8/5/2025 10:00 AM MDT

In this Color Pencil class, students will learn a variety of fundamental techniques to bring their drawings to life using colored pencils. Our objective is to build confidence with the medium by mastering essential skills such as layering, blending, establishing values, and preserving highlights, while encouraging each student’s unique creativity. By the end of this class, students will be able to choose and mix colors, accurately render form through shading and highlights, and create dynamic compositions that showcase their individual style.

Week 1:
The first week focuses on familiarizing everyone with supplies and basic techniques. We’ll start by getting to know different colored pencils and complementary tools. The session will then dive into exercises that highlight proper layering, understanding values, practicing smooth blending, and preserving highlights. This foundational session sets the stage for more detailed projects in later weeks.

Week 2:
In the second session, students will work on coloring a vibrant leaf. This project helps them practice choosing the right color combinations and applying techniques learned in Week 1. Emphasis will be on layering and blending to create the intricate details of a leaf’s natural structure. Students will get hands-on guidance on how to build depth and texture in their artwork.

Week 3:
Week three introduces the concept of rendering three-dimensional forms using a subject like colorful apples. Here, the focus shifts to understanding how light interacts with curved surfaces. Students will learn to use highlights and shadows effectively to create the illusion of depth and volume, ensuring that their apple looks both realistic and lively.

Weeks 4 & 5:
In the final two weeks, students will take center stage by selecting their own subject. They will apply all the techniques they’ve learned in a self-directed project, with the instructor offering guided help and feedback along the way. This student-driven approach encourages creativity, personal expression, and the reinforcement of all key techniques covered throughout the course.

Ahmadian, Behnaz
Behnaz Ahmadian

Behnaz Ahmadian was born in Iran and raised in the United States. She is currently living and working in Colorado. She is an artist and an art instructor. She likes to work with many different mediums but the main medium she works with, is acrylic. Behnaz is very fascinated with pattern and color and incorporates them in her paintings.

Behnaz grew up in the family of creatives and had always loved art and being creative as a child.  Behnaz is a self-taught artist always making art as a child in her spare time. She obtained her bachelors degree in Biology wanting to go into medicine but her love for art and design made her pursue her career in interior design. While working as an interior designer, she was led to create unique paintings full time. Her sense of color and pattern creates pieces that are truly unique which she drew from her experience as a designer. Her designs are recognized for their vibrant colors, details and patterns.

Behnaz’s mother has been her true inspiration. Her mom has now passed but with each piece that she creates, she hopes to share the feeling of love and joy that her mom worked so hard to nurture in her as a woman, artist and designer. Now painting each piece is like a journey that takes Behnaz back to when she was introduced to art and fabrics with color and patterns through her mom who was a fashion designer. Her mother was the one who taught her how to draw and always encouraged her to be creative and incorporate meaning into her every piece.

As an artist, Behnaz also loves to draw and capture the unique characters of animals because they are so special and bring meaning to those who love their pets.
