Clay and Mixed Media: Trial, Error, Discipline and Experimentation

In this class, students will improve handbuilding projects through expanded surface treatment usages as well as exploration into combining mixed media materials with clay. Handbuilding techniques will include slabs, slips, coils and mold-work. The techniques explored have applications for clay vessel makers and functional ceramicists. Participants walk away with heightened appreciation for display and a deeper understanding of two uniquely compelling materials. Bring materials you would like to incorporate to class. ie. wood glass metal, textiles, plastic. Bonding materials including glues and mechanical attachments will be discussed to complete projects. Combining materials requires learning new techniques that demand trial and error, discipline, experimentation.
- Previous experience with clay is preferred
Clay:
Each class includes a materials fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to this fee, students will need to purchase clay through the Registration Office at ASLD, which must be done in person. Clay costs are $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. Please only purchase clay from ASLD, unless approved by the studio manager. No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
Tools:
Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges are available for purchase at the Registration Office.
Other supplies:
Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty to ceramics class, including close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing an apron and a towel.

Janey Skeer
Janey Skeer has a Masters in Fine Arts in ceramics from the University of Denver and has been a working studio artist for over 28 years. She exhibits locally, regionally, and nationally. Skeer's art combines clay and steel and explores the interplay and unity of texture, shape, light, shadow and color. Her work can be found in public and private collections, including those of the Smithsonian Institution, Apple Computer and Westminster City Hall.
