Encaustic Sculpture

Adult Course | Registration opens 8/5/2025 10:00 AM MDT

Discover the expressive potential of encaustic in three dimensions! In this hands-on class, students will explore sculptural form using cardboard as the primary armature, layered with encaustic (molten beeswax and damar resin) and an array of mixed media techniques. We'll cover basic encaustic application, surface manipulation, and how to build depth, texture, and structure using both traditional and unconventional materials.

Students will learn to:

Construct armatures and forms from recycled cardboard
Safely work with encaustic tools and materials
Combine wax with paper, fabric, wire, pigment, found objects, and other media
Create dynamic surface treatments including carving, embedding, and incising

This class is perfect for artists looking to expand their encaustic practice beyond the flat plane or for anyone curious about working dimensionally with tactile, layered materials. No prior encaustic experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore and play.

All materials provided, though students are encouraged to bring personal items or found objects to incorporate into their work.

  • Supplies will be provided
Kelly Austin-Rolo

Kelly Austin Rolo is a contemporary painter and printmaker whose primary focus is working in encaustic and mixed media. Originally from Lewes, Delaware, she received her B.F.A. from Syracuse University and started her career as a corporate designer in NYC working with top architectural firms. After living and working in New York City for 15 years, she moved two hours north of Manhattan to the rural countryside.

A recent transplant to Denver, Colorado, her work explores the natural world and man-made landscapes and cityscapes. Kelly's cyclical process of creation to destruction, back to creation, allows her to play with colors and materials, working their shapes over time, resulting in organic and harmonious forms.

Her work appears in collections throughout the US.
