Wax, Paper, Scissors Encaustic Monotype

Adult Course | Registration opens 8/5/2025 10:00 AM MDT

Over two full days dedicated to creative exploration, you will gain technical skills, develop sophisticated collage composition techniques, and deepen your creative intuition to produce a truly original encaustic collage as a background for encaustic painting.

The workshop will begin with a focus on encaustic monotype printmaking. You will create a series of distinctive, one-of-a-kind papers that will form the foundation of your collage work. In addition to your own monotypes, a curated selection of specialty papers and materials will be available to further enrich and diversify your compositions.

This course introduces a unique approach to preparing your surface: you will learn to collage with a specialized wax-receptive paste that provides an ideal ground for encaustic. Building on this foundation, you will use molten encaustic medium to embed papers and incorporate dimensional elements, fusing them seamlessly into the surface. This collage will create a background for encaustic painting.

While traditional collage relies primarily on glue, encaustic collage transforms the process, creating rich textures, translucency, and depth through the luminous qualities of wax.

By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a completed encaustic collage that integrates technical expertise, personal expression, and the unique alchemy of this dynamic medium.

Kelly Austin-Rolo

Kelly Austin Rolo is a contemporary painter and printmaker whose primary focus is working in encaustic and mixed media. Originally from Lewes, Delaware, she received her B.F.A. from Syracuse University and started her career as a corporate designer in NYC working with top architectural firms. After living and working in New York City for 15 years, she moved two hours north of Manhattan to the rural countryside.

A recent transplant to Denver, Colorado, her work explores the natural world and man-made landscapes and cityscapes. Kelly's cyclical process of creation to destruction, back to creation, allows her to play with colors and materials, working their shapes over time, resulting in organic and harmonious forms.

Her work appears in collections throughout the US.
