Beginning Sewing

Multi-Generational | Registration opens 11/4/2025 10:00 AM MDT

Introduction to sewing, including the use of a sewing machine and serger, fabric and pattern selection, pattern layout, cutting, and construction methods. Students will make a wine bag or a tote bag first, then construct elastic waisted shorts or pants using a pattern. If time permits students will be exposed to clothing alterations, sewing home projects and unique gifts. The student will learn how to safely operate a sewing machine and a serger. The student will learn how to use sewing notions including iron. The student will construct a simple unlined tote bag. The student will learn how to read the back of pattern envelope, the guide sheet instructions, and buy fabric to complete elastic waisted pants.

  • Fabric & pattern to construct elastic pants for the third night of class (discussed first night of class)
Vicky Nolan

In addition to being an Emily Griffith Technical College instructor, Vicky is a board member of the Colorado Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (CATFACS). She won Teacher of the Year in 2012 and the Westword Mastermind award in 2009. She is also a member of many professional organizations including the American Sewing Guild and Fashion Group International.
