Simplifying Watercolor

Adult Course | Registration opens 11/4/2025 10:00 AM MDT

This class is about a simple way to paint with watercolors.
No complex color study, masks or special effects.
We learn to paint by painting pictures.
It is for a beginners or anyone who tried watercolor in the past but fined it to difficult.
Primarily the class is for anyone who loves the joy magic and playfulness of watercolors.

Class objectives include learning a simple way to create a realistic story telling picture in watercolor.
A pencil composition using a sketchbook. Light and shadow pencil study for watercolor painting.
learning transferring method from sketchbook to watercolor paper. Simple applications of paint, brushwork, washes, that are unique to watercolor painting.

  • Paint:
    Winsor Blue (green shade)
    French Ultramarine
    Cobalt Blue
    Cerulean Blue
    Burnt Umber
    Burnt sienna
    Light Red
    Cadmium Red
    Raw Umber
    Raw Siena
    Aurelian Yellow
    Cadmium Lemon

    Optional paints:
    Payne’s Gray (or Ivory Black)
    Cobalt Violet
    Viridian Green
    Alizarin Crimson
    Cadmium Orange
    Titanium White

    Students can get by with:
    1-2 blue
    1-2 yellow
    1-2 reds + umber & sienna

    Cold press white watercolor paper
    9X12 or similar size sketchbook
    Variety of size brushes, Small to large watercolor brushes
    Watercolor Palette
    Cup for water
    Paper towels or rags
    Drafting tape
    Clips
    Board for the watercolor paper
    Pencil 4B, HB,
    Kneaded Rubber eraser

Attended The Art Students League of New York and received his AA in Fine Arts from The Parsons School of Design. Josh has been a working and exhibiting artist since 1983. He's taught painting a various schools including: CU Boulder, Naropa University, Scottsdale Art School, and currently at the Art Students League of Denver.
