Techniques in Egg Tempera

Students will learn the mixing and application methods that I use in the creation of egg tempera paintings as well as assistance in drawing and composition. The first class will cover how to make the gessoed panels and then mixing the paint. In the next few classes students will continue to work on their own paintings while perfecting their use of the medium.
- Basic drawing skills are needed but no experience in painting with egg tempera is required.
- One #1 or #2 sable watercolor brush
2 eggs
We will discuss the preferred supply list in the first class.
The instructor will have some palettes and pigments for sale.
The $10 supply fee will cover the use of other basic supplies in class.
After the first class student may choose to buy pigments, palette, brushes, etc. The average cost for all pigments, brushes, and palettes is around $130.
Mark Thompson
Thompson is one of a handful of artists in the United States who have revived the Renaissance art of egg tempera painting. He is a member of the International Guild of Realism and was recently featured in the traveling exhibit ''The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century."
