Japanese Calligraphy as Art
Adult Class | Registration opens 2/3/2026 10:00 AM MST
We will discuss and practice basic Kaisho Square strokes with certain angles, pressures, and flow until your hand/arm get the feeling of the movements and space between strokes. We will also practice some brush exercises, Japanese letters and Kanji Chinese characters, as well as free style variations. We will end with exploring your own unique mark makings in individual art pieces.
Newsprint pad (9x12 or larger)
Asian calligraphy bamboo brushes and a paper weight (if you have them, or brushes and paper weights can be borrowed during the class)
All other supplies (sumi ink, rice papers, felt mat etc) provided
Mamiko Ikeda
Tokyo-born Mamiko Ikeda is a cultural educator, artist, and animator. Early in her life she began studying shodo (Japanese calligraphy) with her mother, master calligrapher Shotei Miura, as her guide. Drawn to the American West to study Native American culture and storytelling, Ikeda earned a Master's Degree from the University of Denver in Liberal Arts, specializing in American Indian Studies. Mamiko's art and animation movies have appeared in a variety of Colorado venues.
