Rescue and Restore textile holes in garments for knees, crotches and pockets. Mending with Fabric Scraps and Embroidery Thread Practice sustainability and breathe new life into your cherished pieces.

This class in slow hand stitching teaches you how to repair and creatively enhance holes in your favorite pieces. Learn interesting techniques to cover holes and add decorative elements using fabric scraps and embroidery thread. Discover the art of reviving textiles, allowing them to be used and reused for years to come. In this class, you will learn:
1. Basic stitches essential for mending
2. How to choose the right embroidery floss
3. Selecting appropriate needles for different tasks
4. The pros and cons of using an embroidery hoop
5. Techniques for applying patches to textiles
6. Stitches that strengthen fabric fibers Discover interesting techniques to cover holes and add decorative elements using fabric scraps and embroidery thread. Master the art of reviving textiles, allowing them to be used and reused for years to come.

  • Students registering for this class should know how to thread a needle and do basic hand stitching.
  • All supplies will be provided.
    Feel free to bring a project/textile that has wear and tear or holes that you would like to enhance by stitching and if you have thread you want to use bring it.

As the sole designer and visionary of my brand of clothing labeled Brooks LTD I have been creating, professionally designing and selling my brand for more than 48+ years from my private atelier in Denver, Colorado.

 

I have recently embraced sustainability as a core part of my ethos. My brand is now incorporating hand stitching, recycling and mending into the design process. This shift reflects a growing awareness in the fashion industry about the environmental impact of textile waste. By focusing on these techniques, I am helping to extend the lifespan of garments, keeping them in wardrobes and out of landfills.

 

My brand is not just applying these principles to new designs, but is also teaching mending skills. This educational aspect empowers students to repair and maintain their own clothing, which can significantly reduce textile waste. It's a forward-thinking approach that combines fashion with environmental responsibility.

By teaching mending skills, I am extending my design philosophy beyond just creating clothes, to empowering students to participate in the ongoing life and evolution of their garments. I welcome students of all genders to learn how to mend, fix and reuse current pieces to keep them out of the landfill.  It’s our environmental responsibility.
