Using acrylic paint techniques, students will investigate the ways in which portraiture can be used in unexpected spaces. Whether it's imposing an expressive self portrait on an inanimate object, or creating a portrait with mechanical robotic elements, students will push the limitations of their imagination and portrait painting.

Through juxtaposition and exploration of the subconscious mind, surrealist painters have been expanding the boundaries of reality for the past century. Students will gain insight and inspiration from historical and contemporary surrealist artists while simultaneously learning portraiture painting techniques and how/when to apply them.
