Developing Artistic Vision in Ceramics
Adult Class | Registration opens 5/6/2026 9:00 AM MST
This class is designed to help students develop their own artistic voice in ceramics. There are many steps to learn in ceramics and once students understand the basics, it can sometimes be challenging to develop one’s personal style.
Students will start the class with a vision board exercise to clarify their artistic vision. Next, students will practice sketching their ideas to help bring them to life. The following classes, students will explore different forms and decorative techniques. The final class will conclude with a group critique, where students will reflect on their work, discuss areas for growth, and consider future directions.
This class is open to wheel throwers and hand builders.
Previous experience in wheel throwing or hand building necessary
Clay:
Each class includes a materials fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to this fee, students will need to purchase clay through the Registration Office at ASLD, which must be done in person. Clay costs are $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. Please only purchase clay from ASLD, unless approved by the studio manager. No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
Tools:
Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges are available for purchase at the Registration Office.

Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty to ceramics class, including close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing an apron and a towel.
