Color Vocabulary and Learning How to Mix Accurate Colors

Sampler | Registration opens 5/5/2026 9:00 AM MST

Ever heard the words “hue”, “value”, “tint”, “tone”, and “neutrals” and wondered what the heck that all means? You are not the only one. Artists have tendency to speak a different language when it comes to color. Understanding the language of color becomes a great tool in identifying and mixing colors when making art, and although it seems complicated, knowing the language actually really helps to make your paintings come alive.

This is an all levels friendly class designed to teach vocabulary alongside techniques for mixing acrylic paint to match a color. By the end of class you will be able use a palette/palette knife for mixing, understand a more complex version of the color wheel, know the terms hue, value, tint, tone and neutral, be able to look at anything and make the colors seen, and have a better understanding of how light effects the color of objects.

Some drawing experience is encouraged but not required. No painting experience required, and all supplies will be provided. PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN PAINT! All students will be provided the same paint from the instructor, so colors stay consistent.

Please be aware, although with class is designed for artists of all levels, it is a very technical and detailed class. A lot of information will be given in a short period of time with extended periods of intense focus. If you are like the instructor and are a total nerd for details, techniques, and theories, this is the class for you!

  • Experience drawing basic shapes from a still life.
  • Students may bring their own paint brushes, pallet, and pallets knife but it is NOT required. All supplies will be provided. PLEASE DO NOT BRING PAINT.
