WAX+PAPER: Encaustic Printmaking

Adult Class | Registration opens 5/5/2026 9:00 AM MST

Discover the exhilarating process of "pulling" an encaustic monotype from a heated palette. Engage in drawing with pigmented wax, paired with spontaneous mark-making that sparks creativity and intuition. The results are both captivating and rewarding.

Explore additional techniques such as stenciling, stamping, and blocking, expanding your artistic repertoire. Whether you incorporate these monotypes into your primary body of work or blend them with mixed media, collage, or book arts, encaustic monotypes open up a world of endless possibilities for contemporary artists. While no prior experience in encaustic painting or printmaking is required, familiarity with encaustic is beneficial.

The workshop includes demonstrations and discussions on:

The interaction between different types of paper and wax pigment
How temperature influences the outcome of your prints
Effects achieved through encaustic medium and pigment
Techniques for layering color
Using stencils, string, and other tools creatively
Recognizing when your work is complete
Each day will feature demonstrations, personalized assistance, Q&A sessions, troubleshooting, and ample individual work time. By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a wealth of new knowledge and a collection of finished monotypes. This workshop welcomes all skill levels. For a quick introduction, please watch my demo video on encaustic monotype printing.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this workshop will elevate your practice and inspire you. You'll go home with new skills and artwork that you'll be proud to show off.

  • All supplies will be provided.
Kelly Austin-Rolo

Kelly Austin Rolo is a contemporary painter and printmaker whose primary focus is working in encaustic and mixed media. Originally from Lewes, Delaware, she received her B.F.A. from Syracuse University and started her career as a corporate designer in NYC working with top architectural firms. After living and working in New York City for 15 years, she moved two hours north of Manhattan to the rural countryside.

A recent transplant to Denver, Colorado, her work explores the natural world and man-made landscapes and cityscapes. Kelly's cyclical process of creation to destruction, back to creation, allows her to play with colors and materials, working their shapes over time, resulting in organic and harmonious forms.

Her work appears in collections throughout the US.
