Venerating Teddy: Using Oil Paint and Gold Leaf to Celebrate Our Stuffies

Adult Class | Registration opens 8/4/2026 9:00 AM MDT

Our stuffed animals are often our secret keepers and unsung heroes that have followed some of us from infancy to adulthood. In this class we will use oil paints and gold leaf to sanctify and honor our stuffed animals and illuminate their importance the way so many of them have illuminated our darkest nights. During out first class, we will bring either a stuffed animal or a photo of one and begin our sketches for our paintings. We will decide whether to use atmospheric ambience as our backgrounds or if our stuffed animals are more suited to be in their natural habitats: bed. On the second day of class, we will either begin or continue the beginning stages of our paintings and explore the color, form, textures, and value of our stuffed animals with oil paint. On the third day of class, we will apply our gold leaf in carefully chosen areas of the compositions, and finish the final details of our stuffie portraits.

  • This class was designed with the upcoming show in mind: Warm & Fuzzy: ASLD Small Works Holiday Salon. All pieces for this show must be size 12x12 inches or smaller.

    So, with that considered:

Please purchase 2-4 wooden painting panels, canvases, or canvas boards that are between 10x10 inches and 12x12 inches. Please consider the possibility that you may want to frame your art work and those dimensions would be included in the 12x12 parameters.

Oil Brushes (must be specifically for oil paint):
    #0 #1 Round Brushes
    #1 #2 #4 #6 Filbert Brushes
    #8 Flat Brush
Note: You could probably get by with a #1 Round Brush and a #2 and #6 Filbert Brush if you must.

Oil Paints (Not all are created equally! I prefer Gamblin):
    Napthol or Cadmium Red
    Hansa or Cadmium Yellow
    Ultramarine Blue
    Burnt Umber
    Ivory Black
Titanium White (I find you should always buy the big tube)

    Mineral Spirits (odorless):
ONLY Winsor&Newton Sansodor or Gamblin Gamsol
    Brush Washer Jar

    Medium:
    Gamblin Galkyd Gel

    Palette Knife for mixing paint
Palette with a lid of your choosing
    Paper Towels or Rags
    Disposable Gloves
    Sketch Pad and Pencil

    Gold Leaf:
Metal Leaf Adhesive (Mona Lisa or Craft Smart works well)
    Gold Metal Leaf Sheets
Metal Leaf Sealer (Mod Podge Gloss can work in a pinch)
Note: SOMETIMES you can find a bundle that has all three of these together
