Simplifying Watercolor
This class is about a simple way to paint with watercolors.
The lessons are design to remove the complexities from learning this delightful but challenging medium.
In each class, we will learn to paint by making a simple picture , step by step, simultaneously with the teacher, and by individual instruction.
No complex color study, maskings, or any special techniques in this class.
If you are a beginner, or if you tried watercolor in the past, found it too difficult, yet still loves the joy, magic and playfulness of the medium, this class is for you.
Class Objectives:
Sketch book compositions for watercolor painting.
Understanding light and shadow.
Transferring method from sketchbook to the watercolor paper.
the use of reference materials and photos, for watercolor.
Simple applications of paint, washes, and brushwork that are unique to watercolor painting.
- No experience necessary, just curiosity and love of watercolors.
This is a suggested list. Please get whatever watercolor supplies fit your budget.
Paints:
Winsor Blue (green shade)
French Ultramarine
Cobalt Blue
Cerulean Blue
Burnt Umber
Burnt sienna
Light Red
Cadmium Red
Raw Umber
Raw Siena
Aurelian Yellow
Cadmium Lemon.
Optional paints:
Payne’s Gray (or Ivory Black)
Cobalt Violet
Viridian Green
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Orange
Titanium White
Students can get by with buying just:
1-2 blues,
1-2 yellows,
1-2 reds + umber & sienna.
Paper:
Bound watercolor paper pads. 9”X12” or larger. Cold press, Rough preferred.
OR:
Spiral book of watercolor paper. 9”X12” or larger.
Get whatever watercolor paper fit you budget.
Sketch book:
Drawing Sketch book: 9X12 or similar sizes.
Optional: Tracing paper: smooth surface, 11”X14” or similar sizes (this will be available in class as well)
Brushes:
Small variety of sizes with some large ones.
The Bamboo orchid brushes are wonderful. No need to get expensive brushes, the budget pre-flow are good to start.
Watercolor Palette:
Plastic,Tin, or Porcelain.
*Or* use dry paints with its own pallet.
Odds & Ends:
Cup for water
Paper towels or rags
Drafting tape (Optional, will be available in class)
Clips (if you use individual paper sheets)
Board for the watercolor paper
Pencil 4B, HB,
Kneaded Rubber eraser
Spray bottel (Optional)
Water container (Optional: fill with distilled water)

Attended The Art Students League of New York and received his AA in Fine Arts from The Parsons School of Design. Josh has been a working and exhibiting artist since 1983. He's taught painting a various schools including: CU Boulder, Naropa University, Scottsdale Art School, and currently at the Art Students League of Denver.
