Sewing is a practical skill, great for hand/eye coordination and all kinds of learning styles. It enhances a child’s development, math skills and perpetuates creativity.
Beginning and intermediate classes stress safety using the sewing machine, how to thread the machine and how all the parts function.
New students start by stitching on straight and wavy lines and negotiating corners. Next, we sew strips of fabric together and learn how to use the serger.
A pillow follows, with their initial stitched on the front. They stuff the pillow and sew up the opening by hand. For many beginners, making their first piece of clothing is very exciting and PJ pants are the perfect thing. These projects take about 2.5 to 3 of the 5 sessions. The last project new students make is a lined tote bag; they are amazed at how it all comes together and they love to carry their belongings home in it.
More advanced students can complete a stuffed animal and appropriate pieces of clothing such as pants with pockets and zippers, knit or woven shirts with sleeves, collars, buttons and buttonholes, overalls, a variety of skirts, messenger bags, backpacks and many many more options.
Machines and materials are provided unless you choose to bring your own.
