Creating Layered Imagery on Clay

In this hands-on workshop, students will explore a wide range of decorating techniques primarily for leather-hard clay while learning some design principles that create cohesive, visually engaging surfaces.
Using test tiles and functional forms, students will experiment with image transfer, sgraffito, mishima, slips, underglazes, stencils, silk screens, monoprinting, and resist methods. Throughout the workshop, emphasis will be placed on combining techniques to develop rich, layered imagery rather than relying on any single decorating method.
By the end of the workshop students will:
Understand how to design forms specifically for surface decoration.
Learn how to build imagery utilizing layers.
Explore both direct and indirect image transfer methods.
Compare paper stencils, vinyl stencils, and silk screens.
Practice numerous leather-hard decorating techniques.
Leave with finished sample tiles, decorated forms, and a personal reference library of techniques.
- This is a 2 day workshop that meets on Saturday 1/9 and Sunday 1/10
Clay:
Each class includes a materials fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to this fee, students will need to purchase clay through the Registration Office at ASLD, which must be done in person. Clay costs are $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. Please only purchase clay from ASLD, unless approved by the studio manager. No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
Tools:
Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges are available for purchase at the Registration Office.
Other supplies:
Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty to ceramics class, including close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing an apron and a towel.
