Life Drawing: from fundamentals to figures

Adult Class | Registration opens 11/3/2026 10:00 AM MDT

This course is geared towards the beginner but can also benefit the advanced student. Students do not need any prior knowledge to begin the class. During the 6-week course, students will work on several fundamentals, leaving the class with a greater understanding of form, values, perspective, anatomy and several gesture artworks. The instructional approach will be academic, each class will open with warm ups, brief lectures and simplified demonstrations with work time to follow. The instructor will give individualized attention during this time. Final class will culminate with self portrait gesture drawing. There will be multiple opportunities for students to ask questions, explore, and individualize their work.

Timeline:
Week 1
Introductions
Overview of tools and materials
Warm up - line through dot exercise I,C,and S lines, simple 2d geometric shapes (ex.circles squares triangles etc.)
3d cubes with no grid
1,2,3-point perspective theory breakdown and demonstration
Value scales in multiple methods: hatch, crosshatch, stipple etc.
Rendering basic geometric shapes and abstract shapes, defining Hard Edge Soft Edge Lost Edge control
1 tone 2 tone 3 tone 4 tone demonstration and defining highlight, midtone, core shadow, reflected light, and ambient occlusion.
Week 2
Week 1 (continued if there’s a pacing error)
Warm up- ball in cup exercise and introduction of the centerline
Skull anatomy, and still life skull drawings
Divided ball and plane method (Loomis Method) Box heads, head templates and proportion of the head
Features of the face, plane demonstration and form demonstration with rotation in Portrait, Profile, and ¾ perspective


Week 3
Week 2 (Continued) if class pacing slows down
Warm up- Line of action with geometric shapes exercise
Full body Landmarks and proportion
Muscle anatomy
Silhouette breakdown, asymmetrical grooves and cascading forms, straights and curves

Week 4
Warm up- Spheres, and s curve shapes, spheres with a tension point, spheres with planes, spheres with shape direction, spheres with cross contour highlight
Adding cross contour shading to s curve shapes
Gesture drawing hair shapes from different photo references

Week 5
Gesture drawing figure and landscape 6x30s-4x1m-2x5m-2x10m-2x30m

Measuring techniques, block in and likeness discussion
Gesture drawing (Self Portrait)
Share work and wrap-up
