In this class, we will explore drawing through an abstract, playful approach. We will use observation as a foundation while interpreting form in a more intuitive way. Through a series of drawing exercises, we will transform still life objects into more surreal compositions.

This course emphasizes intuition, gestural mark-making, and abstraction as ways of observing and drawing. Students will experiment with perspective and scale while developing a more flexible drawing practice.

I will teach compositional and material basics while allowing you the opportunity to explore. I will also introduce exciting work by historical and contemporary artists for inspiration. The goal is to help each person access and nurture their own abstract drawing style and become more comfortable making stylized choices.

We will work primarily with charcoal, pastel, and newsprint on a slightly larger scale. This will allow us to open up our drawing movements and encourage freer interpretations.
