The Art of Wire: Jewelry, Objects & Tiny Sculptures

Discover the surprising possibilities of wire as both an artistic medium and a design material. In this beginner-friendly class, students will explore how a simple strand of wire can become wearable art, decorative objects, and small three-dimensional sculptures through techniques such as shaping, bending, weaving, wrapping, and connecting. We’ll approach wire as a form of drawing in space, using line, texture, balance, and movement to create expressive forms.
Students will begin by experimenting with the qualities of wire and creating small studies to build confidence with the material. As techniques develop, we’ll explore ways wire can be transformed into jewelry, ornaments, decorative pieces, and tiny sculptures. Depending on individual interests and the pace of the class, students may explore techniques such as French spool knitting, wire wrapping, weaving, embellishment, or creating freestanding and moving forms.
The class will culminate in a personal wire project where students can follow their own creative direction—whether that means creating a wearable piece, a small sculpture, a decorative object, or another unique wire creation.
No previous experience is required. This class is designed for beginners as well as experienced makers who want to explore a new material in a supportive, creative environment.

Materials fee covers wire, embellishments, and shared use of tools. Students are welcome to bring a sketchbook, personal wire-working tools (if available), or small found objects and decorative materials they may wish to incorporate into their projects.
If needed/optional: magnifiers or reading glasses that will enable you to see and work with objects the size of a pinhead
