Ceramics and Technology: Drape Molds

This class will explore digital fabrication and traditional ceramics in making drape molds. By the end of this course, students will learn how to digitally design original forms, translate those designs into 3D-printed forms, and use them to create ceramic work through drape molding.
Students will learn the basics of 3D modeling to develop forms specifically designed for ceramic production, considering scale, geometry, surface, and moldability along the way. These digital models will then be made into physical 3D-printed positives that will be used for drape molds. Students will learn how to work with these molds to shape slabs of clay, learning how digital precision can be combined with the variation and tactility of handmade ceramics.
Over 8 weeks, the course will move through a complete digital-to-physical workflow from concept, 3D modeling, 3D printing, clay slab forming, to finishing.
No previous 3D modeling or 3D printing experience is required. Basic familiarity with ceramics is helpful but not necessary. The course is designed for anyone interested in expanding their ceramic practice through digital tools, exploring new approaches to form, and developing a personal workflow that bridges technology and handmaking.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a complete workflow for moving an idea from the computer screen into a finished ceramic object, while gaining practical skills in digital modeling, 3D printing, mold making, and hand-built ceramics.
Clay:
Each class includes a materials fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. Additionally, this class has an additional fee which includes all clay that students will use during class time. If students want to participate in ceramic open studios, they will need to purchase their own bag of clay from the registration office on the 1st floor. Clay costs are $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. Please only purchase clay from ASLD, unless approved by the studio manager. No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
Tools:
Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges are available for purchase at the Registration Office.
Other supplies:
Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty to ceramics class, including close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing an apron and a towel.
