Rethinking the Round Pot

Have you been looking to add variety and intrigue to your wheel thrown forms? In this class, students will confront their preconcieved notions of 'perfection' as it relates to symmetry and will be encouraged to think beyond the wheel as we alter and modify our thrown pieces.
We will discuss historical and contemporary artists who have pushed beyond using the wheel as a means to an end, and create works which exhibit dynamic forms that challenge the notion that wheel throwing is the end point of the forming process. Rather, we will view the wheel thrown pot as the first step in the journey of modification and reconfigurations that eventually land us at a final, expressive piece.
Students will be introduced to subtractive techniques like darting, as well as additive methods of constructions that allow for playful remixing of thrown elements. Students will be shown how to make secure and stable connections for components so that our pieces are structurally sound and engineered for success.
Students must be proficient using the potters wheel to center and throw up to 2 pounds of clay.
Clay:
Each class includes a materials fee which covers the cost of firing and glazing. In addition to this fee, students will need to purchase clay through the Registration Office at ASLD, which must be done in person. Clay costs are $20 for 25lbs of stoneware, $25 for 25lbs of porcelain. Please only purchase clay from ASLD, unless approved by the studio manager. No low-fire clays may be used at ASLD.
Tools:
Community tools are available for student use, in exception of a small sponge. If you prefer personal tools, a basic ceramics tool kit, small sponges and large clean up sponges are available for purchase at the Registration Office.
Other supplies:
Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty to ceramics class, including close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing an apron and a towel.
