Capoeira
Workshop | Available
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form with African roots and a rich history connected to the experiences of enslaved Africans and their descendants in Brazil. It represents resilience and resistance to oppression, as well as the preservation of African cultural traditions. Capoeira is practiced in a circle, called the roda, combining physical expression with live music.
In this class, dancers will be introduced to the elements of Capoeira through dance, music, history, and philosophy. We’ll learn basic Capoeira movements and explore the physical dialogue that develops between participants. Dancers will learn basic rhythms, play Capoeira instruments, and learn how to sing Capoeira songs in Brazilian Portuguese.
Note:
Participants should bring a full water bottle and wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.
Our Spotlight Series welcomes youth Grades 7+ and adult dancers with intermediate experience to learn from guest artists sharing their artistry and expertise.
