From Slavery to Freedom

This course investigates the history of slavery in the Caribbean and Latin America from the colonial times to the nineteenth century. We will examine the similarities and differences between these various slave societies, as well as slaves’ struggle for freedom. We will focus on themes such as the transatlantic slave trade, the Middle Passage, urban/rural slave labor, slave society and culture. Students will understand how slave labor shaped the formation and development of the New World.
